Song Review by Matthew Greenwald

A song that sort of embodies a lot of Ray Charles' appeal, "I Don't Need No Doctor" blends gospel, soul, and R&B as well as rock & roll all in one song. The addiction of love is the lyrical thrust here, and it's couched in a blues-based chord progression, and features some excellent call-and-response vocals. Songwriters Ashford & Simpson would soon go on to greater glory with other artists such as Aretha Franklin, but this is one of their early highlights. The song was covered spectacularly in the early-'70s by Humble Pie, whose version became an FM radio staple.
