Song Review by Ed Hogan [-]

The Temptations' "Shakey Ground" has the kind of rumbling funk feel found on early albums by the Commodores (Hot on the Tracks). No wonder -- producer Jeffrey Bowen had worked with the Tuskegee, AL-born group on "I Feel Sanctified" and "Machine Gun." Though Bowen had given the group back-to-back R&B chart-toppers, there was a contentious relationship between the quintet and the producer, probably due in part to Bowen's focus on recording with lead singer Dennis Edwards while having the background vocal chores handled by session singers instead of the Tempts. Still "Shakey Ground" was one of the best sides by the veteran Motown act and one of the best synthesis of Edwards' gritty vocals with a tasty, funky track. The funk was flowing due, in part, to the song's co-writer, guitarist Eddie Hazel, who worked with George Clinton's Funkadelic. The track features some of the same musicians heard on "Happy People." Co-produced by Motown founder Berry Gordy, co-written by Bowen, Hazel, and Al Boyd, and featured on the number one R&B LP A Song for You, "Shakey Ground" strutted up to number one R&B and number 26 pop in spring 1975.
